If you've read my post on bearings, you will know the tell-tale signs of a bad bearing. They begin making a humming sound (but not always). A real bad bearing will make a grinding sound. We've seen several vehicles in our shop where the bearings fell apart while it was driving. In every case it has caused more damage, requiring a more expensive repair.
